FROM DR. MEJUYA OKORODUDU
I could tell you many reasons why I do this work but I will not, because in truth there is not a lot I can say. I owe the very reason why I am to God. I enlist to serve and pray God`s Grace on my work. I will, however, share two particular experiences that I have had and these remain indelible in my memory. They occurred in 2008 during my training at the Presbyterian Eye Hospital, Baffousan, in The Cameroons.
These occasions are treasurable. The ability of this work to do immense good is embedded deep within my soul and constantly remind me of the words of Sir John Wilson that “it is only in statistics that people go blind in millions. Each person goes blind on his own”. We can as surgeons help them tell a joyful story, one patient at a time. It is the story of their life and it is important. I have since been blessed to share very many happy moments with my patients. Truth be told, I feel privileged to be called to this work, “That the blind may see again”…mark 10.51. Living always in the Grace of God, I can now gladly say “Yes to my chi (destiny)”.
Someday soon, God willing, I will have a hospital group, as large and efficient as the Aravind Hospital Group, India, to which every Nigerian can walk into and be confident that no matter their financial status they will be attended to. No one will be turned back on account of “no money”. No longer should people suffer the burden of avoidable blindness because they cannot afford to pay.
